Local Towns of The Altiplano de Granada

The main towns of the Altiplano de Granada are Huescar, Castril, Galera,Baza, Puebla de Don Fadrique Orce and Fatima

Huescar is the main centre for the area that Cueva del Pino is found in. It is centred around it's large impressive church of Santa Maria La Mayor. Huescar sits at the foot of the huge peak of Sagra (2382m) which is very popular for walking and cycling and is the highest peak south of Madrid excluding those of the Sierra Nevada.

Being the main market town for the Altiplano de Granada, it hosts a large market in the Plaza Santa Adela every thursday. It sells fruit and vegetables, usually locally sourced, nearby is the market that sells clothes, shoes and general household goods. The town also has a good selection of shops.

The surrounding countryside offers the opportunity for great hiking, cycling, horse riding, climbing, canyoning and parasending. It is also a great place for water based recreation with rivers and the lake of San Clemente nearby for fishing, canoeing and swimming as well as local thermal springs.

Fatima is the closest village to Cueva del Pino and is slowly expanding as it is well situated for travel in all directions. It is situated at the foot of the Sierra de Dudda with wide open views over the olive and Almond groves to the south. To the North the majestic cliffs of Pico Zurdica offer impressive home to a wide range of bird life. The hills and mountains above Fatima are very quiet and as a result give a good chance to see deer, mountain goats, wild boar and a full range of birds of Prey. There are two small supermarkets, and 4 Cafe/bars and a very good bakery.

Castril sits at the head of the Castril valley just below the lovely lake of Portillo. The view up into the Natural Park of the Sierra de Castril are truly outstanding. Castril is a lovely andalucian mountain town, with whitewashed houses, a impressive church and a saint overlooking the town. It is a place where the pace of life has not changed in generations. There are bars, supermarkets, banks, doctors, dentist, and a large recreation area with barbeques and a super swimming pool which is open in the summer months. Most of the year it is quiet, with the locals sitting out chatting late in the evening. Friday is Market day and is used as a day for all to come in from the surrounding area to meet up. July and August are busy times of year as it is becoming a popular destination for many spanish holiday makers. Castril has a visitor centre where it is possible to get local information and has a small museum.

Orce and Galera are thought to be some of the earliest sites of human settlement in Europe. The excellent museum of paleontology, housed in the impressive Castillo-Alcazaba de las siete torres The museum has many things from the regions archaeological sites, and includes a piece of skull and infants humerous, reputed to be 1.5 million years old. If confirmed this would be the oldest hominoid paleontology discovery in Europe.
Galera is the site of the 1600 BC settlement of Castellón Alto, which is preserved and a popular attraction. It is also known to be the site of the 6 CB Iberian Necropolis of Tutgi. An interesting town made up of an old cave house part and a more modern part of typical spanish townhouse, built after the christian took back control of the area from the moors in the 15th centaury
